This recital, featuring Chinese pianist, Zhaolei Xie, covers 5,000 years of China’s enduring music. During that time China has experienced eighty-three dynasties from Xia (2070 BC) to Qing (1912 AD) and fostered a massive number of ancient melodies and songs. This very special recital contains piano transcriptions of some of ancient Chinese melodies and compositions that reflect the period of hunger and suffering from the Japanese invasion of China in 1931, through the Civil War, the establishment of Peoples Republic of China, and the Cultural Revolution that followed World War II. The final section celebrates the beauty of traditional Chinese songs, such as the “Liuyang River” and “Jasmine Flower.”
